    Research interests

    Dr. Franklin Berkey is interested in improving family medicine residency education, including exploring the effects of a longitudinal curriculum on resident education and wellness. He has spoken at national conferences to share Penn State’s research and experience with this novel residency curriculum.

    Dr. Berkey’s research interests are varied and mirror the full scope of family medicine. Dr. Berkey has published several clinical reviews and textbook chapters on end-of-life care and has spoken at national conferences to educate family physicians on topics in hospice and palliative care, including the delivery of bad news.

    He has published clinical reviews on a broad scope of other family medicine topics, including atopic dermatitis, West Nile virus and management of urinary tract infections, and has presented regionally on venous thromboembolism, atopic dermatitis and food allergies, and emergency medical services. 

    Teaching and educational interests

    Dr. Franklin Berkey is associate director of the Family and Community Medicine Residency (State College, Pa.) at Mount Nittany Medical Center in State College, Pa. He provides resident education in both the outpatient and inpatient settings, as well as during house calls in rural areas of central Pennsylvania. He also teaches medical students in the University Park Curriculum of Penn State College of Medicine's MD Program.

    Clinical interests

    Dr. Franklin Berkey enjoys the full scope of family medicine in both the outpatient and inpatient settings, and he makes house calls when needed. 

    A former emergency medical technician, he currently serves as medical director for an emergency medical services organization in the State College, Pa., area, and sits on the medical advisory committee for the local EMS council.

    Dr. Berkey recently assisted a local agency with implementing an advanced EMT service and is exploring implementation of a community paramedic program.
