Dr. Jed Gonzalo has received extensive research funding from the American Medical Association, Association of American Medical Colleges, Health Resources and Services Administration and Josiah Macy Foundation for development of medical education programs. He currently serves as the Primary Investigator on a 5-year AMA Grant that includes a collaborative between Penn State College of Medicine, Allegheny Health Network, Geisinger Health System, and Kaiser Permanente Health to advance the core competencies of Systems-Based Practice, Practice-Based Learning and Improvement and the integration with the other learning areas.
Dr. Jed Gonzalo is Professor of Medicine and Public Health Sciences, Distinguished Educator and Associate Dean for Health Systems Education at the Penn State College of Medicine. His leadership role within the medical school ranges from course director across all curricular phases, oversight of clerkships, and contributory roles on the Medical Education Leadership Team (MELT), Graduate Medical Education Team (GMELT) and Curriculum Leadership Team (CLT). Dr. Gonzalo leads strategic initiatives for the medical school, inclusive of work that aligns the missions, education continuum and strategic plan.
Dr. Gonzalo is a lead architect of Health Systems Science (HSS), a framework for the tripartite missions of the medical school (education, research, clinical operations) to improve patient health. Health Systems Science focuses on providing a fundamental understanding of how healthcare is delivered and improved, and how interprofessional clinicians work together to improve health. Dr. Gonzalo leads the HSS Office that includes 16 individuals to realize >20 curricula, spanning UME, GME and CME. Outcomes include HSS competencies, positioning HSS within the Penn State Strategic Plan, and numerous innovations, including the Penn State Interprofessional HSS Academy, National AMA HSS Academy, and student patient navigator program. These works have resulted in: (1) national recognition from the Washington Post, Wall Street Journal, US News and World Report and NPR radio, (2) $3 million in grant funds from AMA, HRSA, and AAMC, (3) dissemination of HSS nationally (>100 medical schools use the HSS framework) with 70+ publications and 5 textbooks, (4) 30+ invited speaker engagements and (5) 50+ consultations.
Dr. Gonzalo has received numerous awards, including the PSCOM Scholarship in Medical Education Award, Society of General Internal Medicine Scholarship in Education Award (2016), Macy Faculty Scholar Award (2017-2019) and student-selected Excellence in Teaching Award (2019). He actively mentors over 20 students, residents and faculty per year.
