    Research interests

    Dr. Joseph P. Wiedemer is interested in improving educational models for both graduate and undergraduate learners as well as system quality improvement. He is passionate about training physicians to be the best they can be and family medicine clinical topics.

    Dr. Wiedemer has published clinical reviews on education for skill development, nutrition education, atopic dermatitis and palliative care.

    Teaching and educational interests

    Dr. Joseph P. Wiedemer has extensive experience in residency education, where he seeks to find new ways to train the next generation of clinicians to provide high-quality, effective education in methods of research, health system science and quality improvement.

    He is the inaugural program director for Penn State Health's Family and Community Medicine Residency in State College, Pa. He has developed educational models utilizing longitudinal-style education for resident learning. In addition to being a program director, he regularly precepts residents in their outpatient continuity clinics and teaches residency didactic sessions, while also serving as an adviser and mentor for many family and community medicine residents.

    Dr. Wiedemer created a skills list for residents to learn every week to build self-efficacy in training.

    He has a strong interest in food insecurity and rural health and partners with communities to strive for healthcare improvement in rural communities.

    Dr. Wiedemer designed and co-taught “Law and Medicine,” a course at Penn State Law for law students and Family Medicine residents to learn about each other’s profession. This educational experience brought both sets of learners together in an educational setting. The curriculum included medical topics, including gross anatomy, and law topics, including tort, and culminated in a series of mock trials.

    Dr. Joseph P. Wiedemer enjoys practicing family medicine in the outpatient clinical setting, focusing on preventive, acute and chronic care.
