Research interests

Dr. Kala Venkiteswaran is interested in studying the effect of cocaine and opioid compounds of abuse on embryonic mesencephalic neurons. This includes studying neurochemical fluctuations at varying conditions, characterization of the affected neurons by neuron tracing and using opto/chemogenetic interrogation to understand the mechanism of the addiction. Secondly, studying immunomodulation in Parkinson’s disease is a long-standing interest. This project involves transplanted and viral vector injected experimental animals. Most of the CNS immunology is being studied in this work (graft, host and viral vector induced immune responses). In a third study, Dr. Kala, in collaboration with Drs. Alberto Travagli and T. Subramanian, is studying the gut-brain axis during early stages of Parkinson's disease. This is after treatment with the neurotoxin Paraquat, to understand the nigrovagal connections and following the route of tangled alpha synuclein fibrils. This involves use of chemogenetics to understand the physiological mechanism when there is a toxin affecting the nigrovagal pathway.
