    Research interests

    Dr. Laila Al-Shaar obtained her doctorate degree in Population Health Sciences with a focus on Nutritional Epidemiology from Harvard T.H Chan School of Public Health. She completed her postgraduate studies at the Program of Cardiovascular Epidemiology of Harvard University. Dr. Al-Shaar’s research work has focused on studying diet, physical activity, and other lifestyle risk factors in relation to obesity and cardiovascular health outcomes using large prospective cohorts such as the Nurses’ Health Study and Health Professionals Follow-up Study cohorts. Additionally, she has been working on evaluating and validating different dietary and physical activity assessment methods in these cohorts. Dr. Al-Shaar also works on other observational studies such as the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) studies.

    Teaching and educational interests

    Dr. Laila Al-Shaar is the primary instructor of “Concepts and Applications of Nutritional Epidemiology-PHS 503” offered to doctorate students. She has been mentoring master- and doctorate-level students in conducting research.
