    Research interests

    Mary Lou Kanaskie was appointed director of the Office of Nursing Research and Innovation at Penn State Health Milton S. Hershey Medical Center in August 2018.  Dr. Kanaskie’s primary responsibilities focus on development of research and evidence based practices (EBP) to promote innovations in the delivery of safe and quality patient care.  Kanaskie's recent work includes establishment of a system to mentor staff in creating practice innovations through research and EBP activities.  In 2018, she developed the Evidence-based Practice Fellowship and Writing Academy programs.

    Kanaskie’s research interests include cancer symptom management.  Her research on cognitive changes in women with breast cancer following chemotherapy were presented at national and regional conferences and published in the Journal of Cancer Survivorship.

    Teaching and educational interests

    Mary Lou Kanaskie is an Assistant Professor of Nursing and Public Health Sciences at Penn State and has received state and national recognition for her contributions to nursing education.  She served as interim Director of Nursing Education and Professional Development at Penn State Health Milton S. Hershey Medical Center from November 2017-August 2018.  Kanaskie’s long career in nursing education included instructor in the Oncology Nursing Society’s Chemotherapy/Biotherapy and Genetics Courses.

    She served as graduate faculty in Penn State’s master’s degree in Nursing Education online program where she taught “Nursing Education Theories and Strategies.”  

    As faculty in Public Health Sciences, Kanaskie taught qualitative research methods and served as a session facilitator for the Short-term Intensive Translational Experience (SITE). 

    Kanaskie’s education research interests include education outcomes evaluation to measure knowledge and skill development through continuing education.
