    Teaching and educational interests

    Dr. Max Lowden serves as Residency Program Director and Vice Chair of Education. He has applied the principles learned in his certificate and education masters programs to the teaching of residents, fellows and medical students during their neurology clerkships.

    While serving as residency program director, Dr. Lowden launched an integrated Longitudinal Resident Research Track and collaborated in the incorporation of a dedicated Longitudinal Resident Continuity Clinic block rotation.  He launched a two week required telehealth rotation in which all residents in the program can gain exposure to telemedicine (tele stroke and tele ALS).  Dr. Lowden was given a GME award for the implementation of a workshop in which all residents participate and gain skills on brain death determination and communication of bad news.  Dr. Lowden launched a “Resident Driven” Wellness Program developed and maintained by residents in collaboration with neurology faculty. This initiative also obtained a GME innovation award.

    Clinical interests

    Dr. Max Lowden’s primary clinical interests are in neuromuscular disorders and autonomic disorders. The Neuromuscular Polyneuropathy Clinic and Autonomic Laboratory where he works serves many patients with different forms of polyneuropathies and related conditions. Dr. Lowden provides ongoing care for patients with a variety of neuromuscular disorders and performs skin biopsies for evaluation of nerve fiber density to aid diagnosis of small fiber neuropathy, autonomic testing battery and electrodiagnostic studies (nerve conduction studies and electromyography, or EMG).
