Personal profile

Teaching and educational interests

Dr. Michael Aynardi is actively involved in resident and fellow education as well as education and teaching of medical students. He is currently the assistant director of the Orthopaedic Foot and Ankle Fellowship at Penn State Health Milton S. Hershey Medical Center.

His clinical teaching interests include Charcot and complex ankle and foot reconstruction as well as management of athletic injuries to the ankle.

Research interests

Dr. Michael Aynardi is particularly interested in research involving fractures, tendon and ligament injuries, disorders of gait, Charcot neuroarthropathy and patient outcomes after ankle and foot surgery. He has completed projects addressing the impact of mesenchymal stem cells in allograft tendon healing in a rat model. He is also interested in the ability of mesenchymal cells to help healing in diabetics.

For surgeons, the patient's outcome is critical, but understanding the basic science behind practice is almost equally as important to Dr. Aynardi. By exploring pathophysiology of various disease entities and the biomechanics of surgical repairs, he hopes to advance the field of orthopaedic research from both the clinical and basic science perspectives.

His research thus far has included analyzing patient outcomes after orthopaedic procedures and studying fracture outcomes and the biology behind bone healing. Furthermore, he is interested in studying new ways to improve surgeons' ability to diagnose and heal bone and tendon pathologies in the foot and ankle.

Clinical interests

Dr. Michael Aynardi is a foot and ankle expert and also takes level one trauma call. He sees any pathology related to the foot and ankle, including fracture care and sports injuries, ankle instability and ligament reconstruction, Achilles and peroneal tendon injuries, ankle replacement, flatfoot reconstruction, foot and ankle trauma, ankle and foot reconstruction, bunion (hallux valgus) reconstruction and Charcot reconstruction.
