Research interests

Dr. Robert Gallo has published several articles on and continues to study athletic performance after injury and factors contributing to return to play.

More recently, he has been working on protocols to help better understand genetics and molecular pathways contributing to anterior cruciate ligament injuries and tendon injuries, such as quadriceps and patellar tendon ruptures.

He also has an interest in studies focused upon identifying risk factors for tennis-related injuries and potential preventive strategies.

Teaching and educational interests

Dr. Robert Gallo is the associate program director of the Orthopaedic Residency at Penn State Health Milton S. Hershey Medical Center. In this role, he leads the program’s simulation program designed to facilitate acquisition and honing of clinical and surgical skills. He mentors several medical students per year on their research projects and guides prospective students interested in pursuing orthopaedic surgery residency positions. He has helped institute the residency leadership lecture series and is a small-group facilitator for the Health Systems Science course for first- and second-year medical students at Penn State College of Medicine.

Clinical interests

Dr. Robert Gallo is a board-certified and subspecialty-certified orthopaedic sports medicine surgeon. He specializes in treatment of athletes of all ages and skill levels and commonly treats ACL tears, PCL tears, knee ligament injuries, meniscal tears, chondral and osteochondral defects of the knee, rotator cuff tears, glenoid labrum tears and shoulder instability. He has a special interest in treatment of tennis players.
