Research interests
Dr. Timothy Riley is interested in understanding and ameliorating the epidemic of clinician burnout that threatens the health care workforce and the safety of patients. He is passionate about using mindfulness as a method to address challenging chronic problems and exploring how this proven modality can be delivered to resource-limited settings in the post-COVID19 world.
Dr. Riley has also published clinical reviews on COPD, asthma and allergic rhinitis.
Teaching and educational interests
Dr. Timothy Riley has extensive experience in residency education, where he seeks to find new ways to position the next generation of clinicians to provide high-quality, safe and compassionate care through curricula in well-being, humanities, practice management and quality improvement.
He has developed and taught many courses for Penn State Health's Family and Community Medicine Residency (Hershey, Pa.), including humanities, diagnostic imaging, wellness, quality improvement and health systems management. He regularly precepts residents in their outpatient continuity clinics and teaches residency didactic sessions, while also serving as an adviser and mentor for many family and community medicine residents.
Dr. Riley has also created and taught sessions for Penn State College of Medicine's Junior Faculty Development Program on values, burnout and vitality.
He has led sessions on well-being and mindfulness for varied audiences, including faculty, residents, medical students, nurses, medical staff, undergraduate students and the public. He also enjoys outpatient clinical teaching with medical and physician assistant students.
Dr. Riley helped to launch the Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction course at Penn State Health and teaches several eigh-week cycles of the program each year.
Clinical interests
Dr. Timothy Riley enjoys the full scope of family medicine in the outpatient clinical setting, treating adults and children. He has participated in numerous quality improvement and safety projects to enhance the clinic experience for patients and improve health outcomes.
