Dr. Umar Farooq's primary areas of research interest have included the role of novel drug therapies in slowing the progression of diabetic nephropathy and cardiovascular disease in patients with Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus. Other areas of interest are renal outcomes of kidney transplantation, membranous nephropathy, and resistant hypertension.
Dr. Farooq is the principal investigator of clinical trials involving diabetic nephropathy and renal denervation for resistant hypertension and of drug trials to manage membranous nephropathy.
Dr. Umar Farooq is involved in medical student, resident, fellow and faculty education. He serves as core clinical faculty for the Nephrology Fellowship and previously served as associate program director for fellowship training and divisional director for both medical student clerkship and medicine resident clinical rotations.
He is actively involved in organizing the annual continuing medical education Kidney Updates event.
Dr. Umar Farooq's clinical activities are focused on chronic kidney diseases, home dialysis, glomerulonephritis, living donation and resistant hypertension.
Dr. Farooq serves as associate chief medical officer for the academic practice division of Penn State Health.
