The proposed basic research will address the need for accurate control of the microstructures, and thus mechanical properties, generated during additive manufacturing and the dimensional accuracy of the components produced by Direct Digital Manufacturing for the Navy. The approach of the proposed research is to develop and integrate detection, modeling, and control systems on three different time scales: the fast single-input, single-output scale, the medium intra-layer control of hatch order scale, and the long inter-layer control of defects scale and the demonstration of this process control system on stylized components representative of integrally-bladed rotors and similar structures.
