A comparison of models for shadowing functions for random rough surfaces

Abstract

The paper compares three analytical models of the shadowing function for random rough surfaces. The comparison is based on a simulation model. When the terrain is more correlated over broader regions, all the shadow functions tend to coincide, but for rougher surfaces, we find that Smith's function is in closer agreement with the simulation model while Wagner's function is the least accurate.
