ACTIVATED CARBON: PHYSICAL STRUCTURE AND DOC REMOVAL FROM SECONDARY EFFLUENT.

Abstract

Activated carbons were prepared from prune pits by pyrolysis to 900 degree C in an argon environment, then activated in CO//2 at 900 degree C for activation times ranging from 15 to 60 minutes, causing 22 percent to 67 percent burnoff. These were compared to Filtrasorb 400 and Aquanuchar A in regards to specific surface area, pore volume distribution, and the rate and extent of adsorption of the dissolved organic carbon (DOC) found in wastewater secondary effluent. It was found that the magnitude of all these parameters increased with increased time of activation. The prune pit chars activated for 40 to 60 minutes were superior to Filtrasorb 400 and Aquanuchar according to the above criteria. The uptake of DOC from secondary effluent onto these powdered activated carbons according to a model based on linear equilibrium and rate controlled by pore diffusion.
