Age-hardening characteristics of a martensitic FeNiMn alloy

Abstract

Age-hardening characteristics of an Fe20%Ni5%Mn alloy were studied using hardness measurements, mechanical properties measurements and transmission electron microscopy. The strengthenin of the alloy was found to be caused by the precipitation of mainly an ordered body-centered cubic (b.c.c.) phase in the martensite matrix. At later stages of aging, this ordered b.c.c. phase is replaced by a disordered equilibrium face-centered cubic (f.c.c.) phase in the martensite matrix. Precipitation sequences and precipitate morphologies and structures are described.
