An Adaptive Speed/Flow Controller for a Continuous Flow Left Ventricular Assist Device

Abstract

Due to a large population of end stage congestive heart failure (CHF) patients and lack of donor hearts, long term left ventricular assist devices (LVADs) are in great demand. Long term LVADs rely on their physiological controllers to achieve long-term use and good performance. Based on the properties of the human cardiovascular system and continuous flow (CF) LVADs detailed in this paper, an adaptive controller is designed for a magnetically supported CF LVAD using the displacement signals from Hall sensors in the housing alone. Simulation results of cardiovascular system with disturbance, or in rest and exercise conditions show that this adaptive controller can successfully provide the necessary cardiac flow output, lower diastolic pressure of the left ventricle without introducing left ventricular suction.
