Abstract

The aim of this study was to identify the challenges, needs and recommendations of graduate students who were receiving training and education in the Psychological Counseling and Guidance field in Turkey, and to offer suggestions to institutions in relation to how to attend to these difficulties and needs. As it is stated in the Council for Accreditation of Counseling and Related Educational Programs (CACREP, 2016), when training counselors, individual factors such as expectations, needs, and characteristics of the students and personal tendencies of graduate students about the program should be taken into consideration. Data in this study were collected through a semi-structured interview form that included 11 open-ended questions. Snowball and purposeful sampling methods were used to reach potential participants. Themes and codes related to the data were created and analyzed by utilizing a method of content analysis. Results indicated that students wanted their training and education to include a focus on how to publish research, to include more hands-on activities in application-oriented courses, and to include more effective supervision through coursework. Working in a setting outside of an academic setting, a perception of the course contents being limited in scope, and hierarchical relationships in the department were the leading student concerns. Implications of the findings, and recommendations are discussed
