A simplified and practical approach for nonlinear seismic analysis of highway bridges is proposed. Efficiency and effectiveness of the proposed model is discussed in detail. The effects of soil-structure interaction, analysis methods, and bridge skews on bridge responses are also carefully examined. The results obtained from the simplified model are compared to those of refined models. The paper concludes with a number of real bridge examples and recommendations.
