Presents longitudinal evidence from 3 age cohorts (Grades 7-8, 9-10, and 11-12) in 13 private and parochial schools that demonstrates systematic increases in self-esteem as Ss grow older. Three potential artifactual reasons for these results are assessed: (a) S attrition, (b) the effects of testing, and (c) carelessness of Ss. None of these are found to be responsible for the pattern of results. Several possible explanations for rising self-esteem during adolescence are discussed.
