Analysis of volumetric absorption of solar energy and its interaction with convection

A theoretical analysis of the interaction of volumetric absorption of concentrated solar radiation and convection in a two-dimensional, axi-symmetric absorption chamber is presented. Such absorption chamber is an important part of a recently conceived solar thermal engine, in which concentrated radiative energy from the sun is beamed directly into the working fluid and converted into thermal energy by volumetric absorption. This work represents an extension of the previous studies for the following two reasons: (1) the effects of using collimated as opposed to isotropic irradiation on the absorption efficiency are investigated for the one dimensional case, and (2) the effects of employing a more realistic two-dimensional model, which includes a converging beam and different radiative properties of the cylinder walls, on the absorption efficiency are studied.
