This exploratory paper develops the basis for two hypotheses concerning the mechanism responsible for anomalous cloud lines often seen in Advanced Very High Resolution Radiometer imagery of the Chesapeake and Delaware Bays in cold air outbreak regimes. One explanation is that these cloud lines are forced in the same manner as Great Lakes lake-effect midlake cloud lines. An alternate, albeit more speculative, explanation is that at least some of the cloud lines in question are ship tracks.
