Abstract

A highly automated facility is used at E. I. du Pont de Nemours & Co. to evaluate catalysts in a realistic process environment to determine improvements in catalyst preparation and activation. The automated reactor facility (ARF) consists of six single-pass fixed bed reactors mounted in fluidized sandbaths with flow and temperature control. The ARF and its procedures are described in detail and its use is demonstrated for the partial oxidation of butane to maleic anhydride. It is also used to generate high quality data for reaction kinetics analysis.
