Abstract

We present results from some preliminary experimental studies of two electro-optical phenomena in nematic liquid crystal cells: dynamic scattering and field induced alignment for optical modulation and switching applications, using liquid crystal cells with a variety of surface alignment. Broadband, good extinction ratio, non-polarization selective modulators/switches with onoff response times on the order of a millisecond or so are demonstrated.
