C-band bistatic polarimetric scattering from rain and hail

    Abstract

    A bistatic radar system consisting of a monostatic radar and nonscanning bistatic receivers has been proposed for measuring multiple-Doppler vector wind fields. An S-band dual-Doppler version of such a system was recently demonstrated. Studies have been proposed which aim to determine if it would be possible to differentiate rain and hail, and estimate the median size of hailstones using C-band wavelengths. Simulations and comparisons of bistatic polarimetric scattering from rain and hail at C-band and S-band are presented.
