Abstract

A review focuses on the needs and opportunities for catalytic research for the production and utilization of clean energy and ultra clean-fuels and covers clean transportation fuels, upgrading heavy oil to light and middle distillates, fuel processing for H2 production for fuel cells, use of low-quality natural gas, natural gas-to-liquid distillates, alternative fuel development, comprehensive utilization of coal, shape sensitive catalysis for synthesis of specialty chemicals, and CO2 conversion and utilization. Catalytic research and development in this field should be directed towards more energy-efficient and environmentally-benign processes for effective and comprehensive utilization of hydrocarbon resources including petroleum, natural gas, and coal.
