This chapter focuses on Power Line Communications (PLC) with the characterization of power lines and power distribution networks as transmission media for data communication. It presents an overview of basic power line topologies and characteristics of power line channels. The chapter discusses the channel characterization for different PLC environments, with a focus on models for the channel transfer function and measurements and mathematical models for the noise experienced in PLC systems. It presents a short treatment of techniques for measuring the transfer function of power line channels. This is followed by an overview of hardware emulation tools for power line channels suitable for the analysis and design of PLC solutions. Finally, the chapter provides a list of nine reference channels for broadband access PLC systems, which were defined within the Open PLC European Research Alliance (OPERA) project to enable reproducible performance results and comparisons between different PLC solutions. Controlled Vocabulary Terms: distribution networks; carrier transmission on power lines.
