N2 - We have sequenced the chicken interleukin-1β-converting enzyme (ICE) and ced-3 homolog (Ich-1) cDNA, and evaluated Ich-1 mRNA expression in the hen ovary during follicle development. While two alternatively spliced forms of Ich-1, Ich-1(L) and Ich-1(S), were amplified by PCR from an embryonic chicken cDNA library, only the Ich-1(L) form was found to be expressed in adult ovarian granulosa and theca tissues. The deduced amino acid (aa) sequence of ICH-1(L) is 70.8% identical to human ICH-1(L) and contains the conserved QACRG peptide active catalytic sequence characteristic of many ICE-related family of cysteine proteases.
