The meiotic karyotypes of insecticide-resistant (R) and susceptible (S), and SR F1 mosquitofish were analyzed by preparing spread, silver-stained wholemounts of synaptonemal complexes (SC) from spermatocytes. The method reveals statistically significant differences in the relative length of certain SC's between susceptible and resistant individuals. However, careful study of SCs from SR F1 fish does not reveal detectable heterozygosity for chromosomal rearrangements. It is concluded that populations of SS and RR mosquitofish are geographically isolated and that minor karyotypIc differentiation has occurred. This differentiation may or may not be causally related to the acquisition of Insecticide resistance.
