COMPUTER AIDED MODELING OF TOOL/WORK CONTACT IN INTERRUPTED CUTTING.

Abstract

This paper discusses tool path planning considerations when face milling high strength materials. The successful milling of such materials is heavily dependent on the tool/work interaction at the entrance and exit phases of the interruption. The development of a computer-based module, using a constructive solid geometry package, is presented as an aid in the selection of tool geometry and cutter offset with respect to the workpiece plane of engagement. The module was used to identify the offset required to enable a brittle silicon nitride tool material to face mill 4340 steel (35Rc). This module is presented as a useful addition to the intelligent computer aided planning of the face milling operation with existing tool edge geometries, as well as an aid in the formulation of edge preparations to protect sensitive cutting tool edges during the entrance phase of the interruption.
