Computer modeling of phase transformations in Al-alloys

Abstract

The integration of computational tools for modeling the precipitate microstructure evolution in Al-alloys is discussed. These tools revolutionize the design of alloys and considerably reduce the time and cost for new alloy development. A combination of the precipitate evolution kinetics with a strengthening model is able to yield the quantitaive prediction on the critical resolved shear stress (CRSS) increase as a function of time due to the formation of Guinier-Preston (GP) zones. The physical effects responsible for precipitate microstructure evolution are isolated by a combination of first-principles calculations, a mixed-space cluster expansion approach and the diffuse-interface phase-field model.
