Abstract

Controlling search for implicitly encoded complex spatial objects is a major task in the design and implementation of large-scale spatial information systems. In the current paper, the search control system of a recently-implemented knowledge-based GIS is examined in detail. The strategy used in this system is based upon recursive calls in a three level structure that involves high level constraint-satisfaction procedures, medium-level, 'blackboard' procedures and low-level quadtree search proceedings. The strategy also involves hierarchical, recursive and knowledge-based procedures to control search. -Authors
