Abstract

An ultrasonic guided wave computerized tomography (CT) technique has been developed to monitor corrosion in complex aircraft components. A circular array, consisting of 16 piezoceramic sensors, was embedded onto the hidden surface of a complex aircraft component and data was acquired after simulating corrosion. Corrosion was simulated by removing 0.001" of aluminum metal in a 1" by 1" section of the structure. A CT image was then constructed using a standard CT reconstruction algorithm. Results indicate that the sparse array sensor system, combined with the CT reconstruction algorithm, can accurately predict corrosion location, severity, and area.
