title = "Cross section fluctuations, inelastic Glauber shadowing and ultrarelativistic heavy-ion collisions",
abstract = "Cross sections for collisions of high energy hadrons with nuclei are distributed with a rather large dispersion around the mean cross section. Cross section fluctuations account for diffractive dissociation processes in inelastic high energy collisions and can be determined from inelastic shadowing contributions to total cross sections. These effects lead to an enhancement of fluctuations, increasing with beam energy, in transverse energy and multiplicity.",

note = "Funding Information: 1fe have shown that cross-section fluctuations in the collisions ofhadrons with hadronic targets take into account the propagation of diffractive states and can be estimated from diffractive scattering and inelastic shadowing corrections. The experimental data indicate a rather large dispersion of the cross section around the mean value. We have presented a iiletliod that allows one to include these effects in the dynamics of heavy-ion collisions and find large contributions to the fluctuations in multiplicity and transverse energy, observed experimentally. We stress the importance of including cross-section fluctuations, e .g ., modeled by variable size hadron configurations, in event generators used to study fluctuations in nuclear collisions .
