Abstract

H. C. Kraemer's (see record 1981-24709-001) view of the state of the art in psychiatric research and her suggested coping strategies for problems of design and analysis are questioned. Information regarding population characteristics, clinically significant effects, and error risk can be obtained and are necessary for adequate design and meaningful results. Application of universal guidelines is not an appropriate solution to the problems that plague clinical research. Some alternative strategies to these problems are suggested.
