Abstract

A lumped parameter model of the Pennsylvania State University electric motor-driven ventricular assist device (EVAD) has been developed, allowing a complete analysis of pump and motor designs. The model is fourth-order, nonlinear, and describes empirical pressure-flow relations for the valves. Another feature included in the model is separation of the pusher plate from the blood bag, which decouples the EVAD from the hydraulic system. This permits a detailed force analysis of the EVAD and an investigation of proposed control schemes. A comparison of instantaneous and average pressure and power curves obtained from mock loop testing of present EVAD sytems is used in the validation process. The simulation is currently being used to do parameter sensitivity studies and to investigate modifications to current motor and mechanical drive designs.
