Abstract

The number of people with dementia has been growing worldwide. The cognitive deficits in people with dementia usually lead to lower independence and quality of life. Socially assistive robots (SARs) have demonstrated potential to assist dementia care and reduce workload in caregivers. To successfully and effectively develop robotic care for dementia, end-users are needed to continuously participate in the robot development lifecycle. In this paper, we discussed a focus group and survey study conducted with a group of nine older adults, including seven dementia caregivers, to investigate the acceptance of using SAR for dementia care and to identify potential concerns from the end-users’ perspective. Ongoing research ideas, designs and experiments related to SARs for dementia care were presented to the focus group along with demonstrations of various functions of a humanoid social robot Pepper. The results suggest overall positive attitudes and perceptions of older adults towards using SARs to assist dementia care. The group also made recommendations for future research in this field, such as addressing user interaction design challenges for people with dementia, pet-robot interaction, and potential decision-making issues by SARs.
