Abstract

Depending upon the nascent fuel composition and temperature encountered during soot formation, different species, e.g., PAH or acetylene, can contribute to soot mass growth. Distinctly different nanostructures are observed in soots produced by boilers fired using distillate fuel or residual oil. Histograms are presented for the carbon lamella lengths within these soots by analysis of HRTEM images using image processing algorithms. Examples of varying nanostructures as quantified by statistical measures of lamella length, tortuosity, and separation distance in soots produced by other sources are presented. This is an abstract of a paper presented at the 231th ACS National Meeting (Atlanta, GA 3/26-30/2006).
