Dynamic characteristics and analysis of steel jacket structures with nonlinear flexible joints

Abstract

The effect of nonlinear joint behaviour on the dynamic characteristics and design forces of offshore platforms subjected to strong ground motion is examined. The total base shear calculated from linear elastic transient dynamic analysis is compared with that obtained from analysis with a cyclically yielding joint model. Comparison with results from spectral analysis using the joint-elongated periods shows very close correlation with the transient analysis data. Finally, it is noted that where plasticity and buckling of individual members is involved, the effect of flexible joints on the dynamic response cannot be assessed by simplified methods. A newly developed package ADAPTIC for elostoplastic large displacement dynamic analysis of space frames is briefly described and used to conduct tests with and without automatic mesh refinement, for accuracy and efficiency assessment.
