Abstract

The electrooptic effect (at λ= 633nm) in PMN-32PT relaxor ferroelectric single crystal was investigated as a function of small signal modulation frequencies. Piezoelectric resonance measurements were also conducted to examine piezooptic coupling for the influence of piezoelectric lattice vibrations on the electro-optic behavior. Electrooptic coefficient in PMN-32PT crystals was found to have strong frequency dependence in frequencies below 100s Hz apparently due to space charge effects. Anomalous electrooptic properties near piezoelectric resonance frequencies are reported that may be attributed to a synchronization of the low frequency piezoelectric resonance and high frequency transverse lattice vibration. A constructive interaction of overlapping high order piezoelectric and electrooptic resonances can be engineered, using PMN-PT rhombohedral crystal as an example, so that a self-amplified electro-optic detector in microwave frequency region may be envisaged.
