Abstract
The early results of a prospective study of 80 cases of Charnley Muller total hip arthroplasty are reported. The two year follow up shows good or excellent results in more than 90% of the cases. The most impressive gains were achieved in relief or pain, enhanced functional capacity, and improved hip motion. It is mandatory to recognize that overenthusiasm for total hip reconstruction can easily occur. All forms of treatment of the arthritic hip must be carefully considered by the orthopedic surgeon, and he must maintain his perspective when adding total hip joint reconstruction to his therapeutic choices.
