Abstract

The incommensurate modulation structure and electronic structure of the Bi2.1-xPbxSr0.9LaCuOy system were investigated by means of Raman scattering, transmission electron microscopy and x-ray photoemission. Analyses of Raman spectra and electron diffraction reveal that, even though the extra oxygen behaviours in Bi2O2 layers for the three samples are very different, they possess a similar monoclinic modulation characteristic with modulation wavelength qb = 4.0b, which supports the crystal misfit model. Analysis of XPS results indicates that extra oxygen intercalation has a strong influence on the electronic structure; a possible Bi 6s contribution to the valence band is suggested.
