Abstract

Recent developments in the areas of piezoelectric and electrostrictive actuators are reviewed; historical and theoretical background, newly developed materials, applications, and future problems are discussed. New materials such as lead zirconate titanate (PZT) based and lead magnesium niobate (PMN) ceramics reveal excellent actuator characteristics especially by using the wet-chemical preparation technique. The remaining problem is reliability/durability of the actuators.
