Environmental lead exposure and children's cognitive function

Abstract

Recent research has substantially increased knowledge of the effects of low-level pediatric lead exposure. This update article focuses on two specific areas of recent research: low-level neurobehavioral effects, and results from experimental and observational studies designed to prevent or reverse the damaging effects of lead on intellectual development through chelation therapy or micronutrient supplementation. Taken as a whole, these studies suggest that there is no safe level of lead exposure for young children and although small, these effects are enduring and possibly permanent.
