Evaluation of an automated irrigation system for frost protection of apple buds

Abstract

An automated irrigation system was refined and tested on a 0.4 ha. orchard for protection of apple buds from cold while reducing water usage. For three out of six frost events, the air temperature dropped below the critical temperature. The automated irrigation system successfully protected buds from cold during these three nights. The intermittent sprinkler irrigation system control was simulated using fuzzy logic as an alternative approach. The experimental results and the fuzzy logic simulation results are presented in this paper.
