Evolved combustion products from CNT-polymer composites

Abstract

Polymer-CNT composites have been heralded as the next-generation of new materials. While thermal, and mechanical properties have been examined in detail, no work appears to have studied the fire characteristics of these materials, specifically the gaseous and particulate emission products. Our investigation focused on the evolved combustion products from PMMA with SWNTs and CNFs as additives and PS with MWNTs as the additive. Substantial decreases of incomplete combustion byproducts (CO, CH4, C2H2 and particulate) were observed for the CNTpolymer composites. These results portend unforeseen benefits of these new nanocomposite materials.
