Exploring fuzzy cognitive maps for use in a crisis-management simulation

Abstract

This paper describes the design of an intelligent aid to support teams within a crisis-management domain. This aid utilizes a fuzzy cognitive mapping (FCM) technique as its reasoning engine. The incorporation of the intelligent aid into a crisis-management simulation called NeoCITIES is detailed. In this manner, the intelligent aid acts as an expert "observing" the actions of users during their participation in the simulation. This leads to three separate cases of intervention by the aid: 1) if the teams are undergoing high cognitive overload, then the aid will interject and assist the teams with making a decision, 2) if one team member has essential, unshared information, then the aid will intervene and advise the team member to share said information, and 3) team members can directly ask the aid to assist in decision-making. Finally, the significance of this work lies in the functional use of fuzzy cognitive mapping to inform the design of intelligent interfaces intended to support teamwork.
