According to the National Association for Community Leadership, there are 650 to 750 community leadership programs in the United States. Furthermore, these leadership programs are growing from the efforts of smaller towns and cities rather than from the state-wide or national levels. Therefore, this study's purpose was: (a) to examine current literature regarding leadership development and training programs and (b) to review state-wide community leadership training program literature. This paper includes the elements of an ideal community leadership training programs while also providing the means for practitioners to educate themselves and to develop assessment tools for similar leadership education activities.
