High field HTS magnet technology and applications

Abstract

A review of the status of development in high field applications of high temperature superconductors is presented. These magnet systems operate at liquid helium temperatures in a background field supplied by a magnet using low temperature superconducting materials, NbTi and Nb3Sn. By this method, the HTS magnet takes greatest advantage of the high upper critical field properties of the material, usually a composite of Ag and BSCCO. The near term application for this technology is in high field NMR spectrometer magnets; however, longer term one could expect these systems to be used in high energy physics, energy storage and fusion magnet systems.
