Abstract

This paper reports on the research program in which a new class of polymers, the polyorganophosphazenes, have been synthesized and characterized. These polymers are not only new, but they possess a highly unusual backbone structure composed of an inorganic chain of alternating phosphorus and nitrogen atoms. This report is presented under headings - general method of synthesis; versatility of reactions used; limits and restrictions; diversity of chemical properties; relationship of properties to uses; relationship of structure to physical properties; prospect for the future.
