The calcaneus has complex anatomic relationships and frequently is involved in foot pathology. Imaging of the calcaneus can aid the clinician in the diagnosis and treatment of this pathology. Although plain film radiography is the primary diagnostic study that is used to evaluate the calcaneus, other imaging modalities, such as CT, MRI, fluoroscopy, and nuclear medicine have specific roles in certain clinical conditions.
